
Designers, copywriters, and social media experts have been pondering the best way to get people to click on your website since the advent of social media.
But how can you create a website that will do the most good, in a way that also makes you money?
That’s what I wanted to find out in a recent episode of Design Notes, the podcast series about the best design practices and tips to create great websites.
In this episode, we’re joined by Jason Siegel, a creative director at an online store and the founder of DesignTips.com, a website for designers.
Jason is the author of the forthcoming book, The Art of Design, which covers the basics of creating great designs.
I also had the pleasure of working with Jason on a podcast with him about his career and how he came to design the website he created with his brother.
And I spoke with Ben Bausch, the CEO of Design Tips, about how his company works, how he created DesignTips, and how his business has evolved since he started it.

Show notes and transcript Here’s an excerpt from Design Notes: What are your tips for designing better websites?
Jason Sigue: A lot of what you should be focusing on is actually the design, and the design should be a result of the design.
It shouldn’t be the result of a designer having a specific design philosophy or design language.
And that’s where you want to start, because that is the point where you can actually get the most value from your website.
Ben Bussch: The one thing that I think that design does, and it’s been kind of the core of this podcast, is that it can be a really great tool for us to understand what’s happening with people, and then to actually be able to help people understand what to do with that.
And it can also be a great way to help us understand what we want to communicate to people, which is that we’re all trying to have the best possible experience on our website.
And if we’re not communicating that, it just isn’t going to be a good experience.
Jason Sige: That’s true.
I think a lot of design is about how do we communicate to the people we’re trying to reach, how do you actually communicate to someone that your product is good?
And that is really what design should really be about, and that’s why you want design to be about design.
Ben: It’s really about what’s best for the people, because then they will get to the part where they’re saying, “I can do this, I’m happy with this, and I don’t care about any other aspect.”
And that makes their experience a lot more satisfying.
And we want them to feel that the product they’re buying is a better experience, not just for the first few weeks, but also over time.
And you can really tell how good the experience of getting people to buy your product was, if you can make that happen, and people are happy with that experience.
So, that’s really what we’re going to focus on in the next episode of this series, and there’s a lot to get to, but I’m sure it’s going to all make sense.
Jason: I think it is.
Ben and I have been very excited about the fact that our new book, DesignTips: The Art and Science of Web Design, is coming out this fall, and we’re thrilled that DesignTips is part of that.

Jason, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us.
Ben, how did you and your brother come up with this idea?
Jason: Well, my brother and I are both in our 30s, and our careers are basically the same.
Ben has been working for a long time in technology, so he’s been very fortunate.
And Jason, he was a creative person who also loved to design.
So we started thinking about the next step.
We were like, “Well, we could go with the idea that we want people to be happier, and they’ll be more likely to buy our product, and so we should do something that is just great for them.”
And the way that we ended up doing that is that Design Tips is a website.
We put a lot on it, and a lot was about the design itself.
We had to do a lot with the branding and all that.
But it’s really all about what is best for people.
And so we’re really excited about it.
Ben’s an artist, so his style is very different than mine.
